CCTS funding allows investigator-initiated, peer- reviewed Category A protocols (cost and fees) to receive support from the CRU to cover the cost of clinical space, specialized nursing and bionutrition support.  The amount of support is limited and is prioritized to projects obtaining pilot or preliminary data.  Investigators with funded grants are supported on a cost sharing basis.  Investigators with industry sponsors can contract to use the CRU on a fee for service basis. Providing and supporting opportunities for all aspects of clinical research education and training is a major focus of the CCTS. The CRU staff interacts with other CCTS components to identify potential collaborations and additional funding sources for clinical research projects.

The assets of the CRU are available to investigator scientists from all disciplines and specialties. Approximately 90 research protocols are currently active in the CRU, in areas such as cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, lupus, scleroderma, Crohn's disease, hepatitis, tuberculosis, infant stroke, bipolar disorder, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, and substance abuse, among others. Normal volunteers also participate in a variety of clinical trials.  Research projects may focus on the mechanisms of disease, transmission and immunity, treatments, medications or genetics. Subjects for research studies are drawn from diverse populations, including adults, pediatrics and minorities.
